Magnet
TransportationThe District provides transportation, at no cost, for eligible students within a maximum riding time of 90 minutes to the extent feasible and considering traffic conditions. Routes and pickup locations are pre-established and will not be changed to avoid increase in costs. Elementary Magnet students including SPAN schools with Magnet elementary grade levels residing within a two (2) mile radius or within the school’s attendance boundary (whichever is further) are not eligible for District Transportation.

HistoryThe L.A. Unified magnet schools/centers are a voluntary integration program that provide rigorous, high-quality, theme-based instruction designed to facilitate student learning and promote academic achievement. Established in 1977, the magnet programs within our District have been one of the most successful in the nation. Currently, there are 312 magnet programs located throughout the District. South Shores Magnet was founded in 1980.

StandardsEducational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school. The California Department of Education helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards.
